A change in the way the labor force statistics are calculated for boroughs and census areas makes data prior to 2000 not comparable with later data.

Definitions:

  • Labor Force: Includes all of the civilian noninstitutional population classified as employed or unemployed. (See the definitions below.)
  • Employed: During the reference week (the week including the 12th day of the month), includes those who (a) worked as paid employees, worked in their own business or profession or on their own farm, or worked 15 hours or more as unpaid workers in an enterprise operated by a member of their family; or (b) were not working but who had jobs from which they were temporarily absent because of vacation, illness, bad weather, child care problems, family leave, labor-management dispute job training, or other family or personal reasons, whether or not they were paid for the time off or were seeking other jobs. Each employed person was counted only once, even if that person held more than one job.
  • Unemployed: Includes all who were not employed during the reference week but were available for work except for temporary illness, and had tried to find employment some time during the four-week period ending with the reference week. Those who were not looking for work but were waiting to be called back to a job from which they had been laid off also qualified as unemployed.
  • Unemployment Rate: The unemployment rate is the number of unemployed as a percent of the labor force.
