Applicants must have completed at least 1,800 hours of training in each discipline as an apprentice afterregistering with the department, or, have completed at least 1,800 hours as a practicingoptician in good standing in a state, territory, district or possession of the UnitedStates, (graduation from an associate degree program in a recognized school or college ofopticianry may be substituted for experience required). Must have passed theapplicable national examination(s); American Board of Opticianry (ABO), for spectacles and/or the National Contact Lens Examination (NCLE) for contact lenses. Passing a course designated in the board's regulations is also required. Continuing education is required for renewal.

Must complete the appropriate home study course for:

  • Ophthalmic Career Progression Program (OCPP) for spectacles
  • Contact Lense Manual: Volume 1
