Licenses expire on December 31, even numbered years and continuing education is required for renewal.
Applicants need a master's or doctorate in marital and family therapy or an allied mental health field from a regionally accredited school. Applicants must have 1,500 hours of direct clinical contact with couples and families and must have been supervised a minimum of 200 hours including 100 individual and 100 group hours. Applicants must pass the National Licensure Examination for Marriage and Family Therapy. Applicants must pass a state written examination which covers questions on the state statutes and regulations applying to the practice of marital and family therapy and the code of ethics adopted by the board under 12 AAC 19.900. THE SUPERVISED EXPERIENCE MUST BE BY A BOARD APPROVED ALASKA LICENSED MFT.
