Requirements

A license is required for professional land surveyors who offer their services in Alaska. Construction surveyors also need a specialty contractor's license. There is one level of licensure; Alaska does not license land surveyors in training (LSITs).

Applicants must be approved by the board to take the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination. To be eligible for this exam after December 31, 2001, an applicant must have a minimum of two years of educational credit hours in combination with work experience to equal four total years. (2-3 years education credit plus 3-4 years experience equals 6 years total)

Applicants for a professional land surveyor license must pass the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam and the Principles of Surveying (PS) exam. Applicants must also pass the state specific exam, the Alaska Land Surveying Exam (AKLS).To be eligible for the PS/AKLS exam, an applicant must have been approved for, or have passed, the FS exam. They must have a combination of eight years total education and experience. Education must include a minimum of two years of credit hours. The requirement for experience must include three years of responsible charge work experience under the direct supervision of a licensed land surveyor. For further information go to Alaska State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors website.

There is now a continuing education requirement of 24 professional development hours each biennium for registration renewal.

Note: Effective for applications submitted after July 1, 2014 a four year degree will be required. See 12 AAC 36.063 and 12 AAC 36.064 for the details.
